Jewelry care

Take good care of your jewelry

All byBiehl jewellery is handcrafted in 100% recycled metals and, like all jewellery, should be treated with care and properly maintained.

It is important to know that surface treatments such as oxidation and gold plating will wear over time with use. This is a natural process, and some may experience their jewellery oxidising more than others, depending on body heat, sweat and skin acidity.

Silver tarnishes when exposed to air, meaning your silver jewellery will gradually change colour. However, this can easily be removed with a silver polishing cloth.

Here, we have gathered some helpful tips on how to best care for and maintain your jewellery.

Avoid liquids

As a general rule, avoid getting liquids on your jewellery.

Remove your jewellery when showering, washing or sanitising your hands, swimming, or whenever you’re in contact with water.

You should also take it off when sleeping, exercising or sunbathing. Sweat is not good for your jewellery either.

Avoid chemicals

Remove your jewellery when cleaning – jewellery does not tolerate cleaning products and chemicals well.

This also applies to perfume, lotions, hair products and makeup.

That’s why it’s a good idea to put your jewellery on last.

Store properly

The best way to store your jewellery is in an airtight bag or a jewellery box, separately.

This helps prevent tarnishing and also avoids scratches.

Cleaning your jewelry

There are many ways to clean jewellery. You can buy cleaning solutions and polishing cloths from most jewellers.

Here, we guide you through both a quick and a more thorough cleaning of your jewellery.

Step 1

Soak your jewellery in lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap for a few minutes.

Step 2

Then gently brush away dirt and grime with a soft toothbrush.

Step 3

Rinse the jewellery with lukewarm water.

Step 4

Dry them with a soft, dry cloth.

Thorough cleaning of silver jewellery

It can be a good idea to give your silver jewellery a deep clean once a year. Here’s how:

  1. Place aluminium foil at the bottom of a bowl.
  2. Add a small handful of coarse salt and pour boiling water over it.
  3. Place your silver jewellery in the bowl (make sure they are not touching each other). Leave them for a few minutes until clean (not too long, as the silver may become discoloured).
  4. Rinse with cold water and dry gently with a soft, dry cloth.
