Pearl care
Pearls are an organic material and should be cared for accordingly.
Everything you need to know about pearls
What are pearls, really?
Pearls are an organically formed jewellery material that exists in many different varieties. They are created by mollusks when a foreign object enters their shell. In other words, it’s a defense mechanism that results in the formation of a pearl.
At byBiehl – and in the jewellery industry in general – cultured freshwater pearls are used. These are called freshwater cultured pearls, and the fact that they are cultivated is actually a good thing.
Why freshwater cultured pearls?
Naturally occurring pearls are very rare today – and the price reflects that. Harvesting natural pearls also involves harsh working conditions, as it requires diving in the ocean in ways that are not always safe. These challenges are avoided with cultured pearls.
At the same time, it is easier to ensure consistent quality in the pearls used, and the design process can better match the desired pearl type and size – something we, as a jewellery brand, truly value.
Additionally, it is illegal to fish for natural pearls.

We therefore only use cultivated freshwater pearls, available in different sizes and shapes. You can see this, for example, in our Coco collection, where the pearls are small, round and classic in their expression.
Aura Grande is a great example of jewellery with more volume, featuring large freshwater pearls with irregular shapes – each one completely unique. This type of pearl is called baroque pearls.
